All dogs listed here are available for adoption from Yorkie Rescue Houston.  Our goal is to ensure our rescued pets go to their forever home and never end up back in the system.  To that end, an application is required on all potential adopters.   Our adoption fee varies by dog.  We accept electronic funds via VENMO or Paypal, or cash only.

Puppies too young to be spayed/neutered are available for Foster-to-Adopt only.  A FTA contract is required.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Needs a home where someone will be able to stay at home with her most of the time, or take her with them when they're out. She's high energy and needs to be with her people. Stay-at-home parents or work from home individuals are more likely to be a good fit for her. Does GREAT on road trips!

Needs SPACE to run and play. NOT an apartment dog. She will need a secure yard to play in. Valentine likes to run laps in the yard and burn energy out there.

Kenneling a lot will NOT be good for her. She would probably do well with some kids to play with too. If you have an active household, Valentine could be a good fit!

Preferably no homes with cats. She tends to bark at them. If the cat is very tolerant of dogs, there may be an exception. Does well with other dogs.

This poor girl was neglected and being eaten alive by FLEAS~!   she suffered open wounds, secondary skin infections, hairloss... you name it.  she's suffered with it.

But, she is making a swift and complete recovery!!  we are in love with this girl.

Happy and playful!

From Valentine's Foster:

Valentine is so resilient and adaptable, and such a happy girl! Even when she was getting over an upper respiratory infection, all she wanted to do was play. Eager to meet new people and not shy, she is happy to come up and greet you.

She likes to jump up when someone walks in the door and put her paws on their legs. She loves to play all day and has an endless supply of energy. So much personality in a little dog! Toys are a must for her, and she will play with them quite a bit. She especially loves soft stuffed toys and crinkly toys. I recommend providing her with an assortment of toys to help her burn some of that young dog energy and have fun! When she is not bounding around playing, she will lay with you on the couch or bed and nap, cuddled up right against you.

She came to us with some skin problems - she had scratched herself raw from flea allergies, poor baby. With medication to help her itchiness, medicated bath, and TLC, she has really bounced back. Rarely does she itch anymore, her skin is healed, and her coat is growing back beautifully. She has a medium length, very soft coat which will require regular (a few minutes daily is ideal) gentle brushing to prevent tangles, and she loves to be brushed! We will also send her to her new home with her medicated shampoo, which can be bathed with twice a week (it makes her smell so great too!)

Kenneling - She is used to being kenneled at night and occasionally short times during the day, however it's best that she is not kenneled for long periods of time, as she has a high need to be active and play during the day. Valentine would also rather be with you 24/7, so she won't do well being kenneled a lot. She would enjoy sleeping in your bed as well. Sometimes she will cry in the kennel, but placing a small blanket over the kennel helps calm her, if needed.

Training and potty time - Knows how to sit for treats. Will give you her paw if you hold out your hand, and gives high fives, which is completely adorable. Doing pretty well on the leash, sometimes walks back in forth in front of you out of excitement. Will improve with time. Please use a harness for walks, this is gentler on her neck and helps protect her from slipping out of her collar. She is not thoroughly potty trained yet, but we're working on it daily. She has washable pads for the floor in case she needs it, and wears washable dog diapers for accidents too. Frequent potty breaks are helping the training. I recommend taking her out after every meal, drinking water, and playtimes, as she usually has to go after those times. Once an hour potty breaks otherwise. Please have patience with her potty training, she is great and just needs some time!

Activity level - Very active. Loves to play constantly. Will play with toys or with other dogs. Would do best with some space to run around, and especially loves having the back yard to run around and sun bathe. She enjoys bounding around in the yard and eating grass. Will need a fenced yard, as she will try to get out if she sees an opening. She should go to a home with someone who loves high energy dogs and has time to make sure she has enough play time and time outside.

Does great with my own 20 lb male schnauzer. They play constantly and really enjoy each others company. Valentine would really enjoy having another small dog to play with and has the energy to keep up with her. If she is the only dog in your house, then she will need a lot of play time with you and the family.

Other notes about her:

Valentine is about a year old. According to the vet, her birthday is probably around May 2017. She loves chewing on Whimzee treats (and they're great for her teeth). Currently eats Taste of the Wild dog food. Loves to eat! Please feed grain free dog food to her, as she does have skin allergies. Eager to learn and especially treat motivated. I call her the little mountain goat because she likes to sit on the top of the couch and relax. Can be a little mouthy when playing, so may need some work on that. Great on road trips, no car anxiety, just keep her kenneled, as she will roam the car or chew the seat belts. We have travelled with her several times and she did great.

I do not recommend her for homes with elderly individuals, small children, or individuals who may have mobility difficulties, as she is very spunky and will sometimes walk right in front of your feet. I would be worried about someone tripping over her in those cases. If you have stairs in your home, be careful when walking up and down them around her too, as she will stand in front of people on the stairs as well.

Also, be careful opening the front door around her, as she will try to bolt out.

Keep trash bins out of her reach, since she likes to snag tissues (and socks). Will need to make sure she doesn't get fleas, as she does have a significant flea allergy. She will carry her food bowl around in her mouth when she gets hungry somtimes (it's adorable).

We know Valentine will be a great dog for a loving family with lots of time to play with her! Valentine is adorable and her sweet nature will melt your heart. If you think she might be a good match for your family, send us an application!
